Information: This course is designed as a more affordable option than private lessons or board and trains for folks that would like to train their dog as their service dog. This class will teach handlers how to train their dog to perform one task to help mitigate their disablity. The task will be specific to each handler in the class. Task training will be specialized to each group of handlers, with discretion taken to keep each individuals’ disability private. The Task Class will focus on the top tasks need by the group of handlers. For example, behavior alerts for anxiety, behavior interruptions for anxiety/autism/PTSD/etc., picking up objects, pressing handicap buttons, deep pressure therapy, hearing alerts, etc. This class will not cover alerts low blood sugar, heart rate, etc. but will share websites and books that you can learn how to do this with or offer private lessons for these tasks.

Public Access Class: Dogs in this class must have passed the initial service dog evaluation ($85) or be a Nine Realms Client already, must have a task trained or actively working on training, and they must have have demonstrated to the class instructor basic obedience (sit, down, heel, stay, come) to ensure the dog is safe and professional for public work. There is a lot this class will cover including ADA laws, service dog rights, how a professional service dog should act, restaurant behavior, behavior in a grocery store, behavior in large crowds, leave it, door manners, checking out manners, proper leash walking skills in all environments, ignoring the public, walking next to a cart, ignoring dogs in public, settling in public, and much more.

Handlers will focus on all skills and information needed to be independent and professional service dog teams first and foremost. If there is time and dogs are progressing nicely, handlers will be offered opportunities to test for all three levels of Canine Good Citizen and the Nine Realms Public Access Test. However, these tests do not make a service dog a service dog and thus the focus of the class will be on training professional service dogs that accurately task.

Service Dog Classes Basic Information:

  • For the Public Access Class, handlers must have done a one on one, in person evaluation with their dog in order to be eligible for the work in public places to ensure their dog is safe and comfortable in new places. Or, handlers must have already done lessons, or basic obedience group class with Nine Realms
  • For the Public Access Class, handlers must have a disability that a service dog could help mitigate with a task. There is no exception to this rule. You will have to share with the Instructor Karin Wagemann the tasks you want the dog to perform for your disability. This is per ADA law.
  • For Public Access the dog must have a complete understanding of basic obedience.
  • The Task Class is open to handlers who do not have a disablity but want to train some of the skills learned in the class or trainers that want to learn how to train these tasks. There is no law saying you cannot train a dog to perform tasks if you do not have a disability. So all are welcome.
  • Dogs MUST be over 7 months of age to start the Public Access Class.
  • Dogs MUST be over 4 months of age to start the Task Class.
  • Dogs cannot have any human or dog aggression.
  • Any breed welcome.
  • The handler of the dog must be over 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult for all classes.
